Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
